Event Title: HR’s Role in Contingency Planning

Presented by: Joyce Chastain, SPHR, President, HR Florida State Council

Program Description:

Whether it’s a hurricane, terrorist attacks, financial failure from poor business management, workplace violence, fires, cybercrime, product tampering or union strikes, the result for the organization can be substantial damage and loss. 

Human Resources professionals have a significant role in each phase of an emergency:   

  • Before – Planning Stage
  • During – Acting the Plan
  • After – Recovery Mode (Getting Back to Normal) 

Disasters are really about people. During this session, we’ll take a detailed look at each phase and the strategic role and specific responsibilities that are aligned with protecting the human capital and ultimately, the organization.   

Attendees will learn the following: 

  • Why having an Emergency Management Plan is critical to employee well-being and business continuity. 
  • The items to include in safeguarding human resources functions will be detailed.
  • The many facets of HR's strategic role in making sure that the employees are taken care of.
  • The transition from rescue to recovery and, eventually to normal operations following a crisis. 
  • Guidelines and suggestions to assure human capital and safeguard organizational stakeholders and ensure critical business processes in the short and long term

This program is approved for 1.25 general credits through HRCI. 

Pre-Meeting Workshop

Event Title: Legal Developments and Answers to Questions Every HR-Professional Should Know (Part I)

Presented by: Lara Donlon, Esq., SPHR & Jon O’Connell, Esq., The Law Office of Glen J. Torcivia & Associates

Program description:
Legal Developments and Answers to Questions Every HR-Professional Should Know (Part I) will discuss recent developments in the area of labor and employment law, as well as provide answers and explanations to important HR legal-related questions.  Part II is scheduled to take place on August 21, 2014, but will not require participants to attend Part I to benefit from the information in Part II.  Both sessions will follow the same general framework:  an overview of legislative, regulatory, and administrative developments; a discussion of legal trends and case law illustrating such trends; and finally, answers and explanations to various HR/legal related questions. 
 
In this interactive session, participants will learn:
  • Important legislative, regulatory, and administrative developments and how these impact the HR practitioner.  
                 o   Identifying trends is an important part of keeping an organization ahead of the curve.  
  • Participants will learn which types of claims are on the rise, and examples of case law illustrating these types of claims.  
                 o With this data, the participants will be better able to provide focused training and compliance efforts within their organizations.

The questions and answer section will provide information regarding various HR legal-related questions that we will provide, including those impacted by developing case law and new statutes, rules, and regulations. Topics to be discussed include social media in the hiring process, personnel file access, and other common and not-so-common questions attorneys regularly receive from their HR colleagues.

This program is approved for 1.0 general credits through HRCI.
