November Dinner Event & Pre-Meeting Workshop  (Nov. 20)

Title: “Workplace Harassment and Legalized Marijuana - Today’s New Normal”

This presentation will provide an update on workplace harassment, including sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation, almost two years after the start of the #metoo era.  How have employers reacted to certain behaviors that have existed for many, many years, but have only recently received such prominent attention in the news media?  We will discuss best practices for proactively addressing these issues in your workplace. 

The presentation will then turn to another hot topic in workplace employment law: legalized marijuana - both medical and recreational- and it’s impact on employers and employees in the workplace. The laws surrounding marijuana in the workplace are frequently changing. We will discuss what happened in 2018, both in Florida and around the country, including what to expect in 2019 and beyond. This is a very tricky area of employment law and employers will greatly benefit from learning best practices in this popular new area. 

Eric is a longtime member and Past President of HRPBC and has been presenting legal seminars to HRPBC for more than 10 years. He promises to deliver an entertaining and educational presentation - hope you will join us!

According to a recent article by HR consultant Laura Woods “Certification can be beneficial on both an organizational and personal level. A recent report from the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) and the Top Employers Institute, “Emerging Evidence: Business Performance and the Validation of HR Best Practices,” found that companies that value HR certification outperformed the industry average by 14 percent over a five-year period. The same companies outperformed the stock indexes in their respective countries by an average of 51 percent over the same period.

Outside of studies and numbers, certification and recertification shows a commitment to learning about and keeping up with the profession over time. Employers who support HR certification show a commitment to their employees, which in turn can lead to greater engagement and retention. The perception of individuals who have gained certification is that they have had to commit to a process and take steps to gain knowledge in the field. It lends credibility to the individuals who hold the credential and to the organizations that employ them.”

+ Provide an overview of the SHRM Bock – Body of Competencies and Knowledge including 2019 testing window dates; discuss changes to the SHRM learning system for 2019
+ Share information about the new FREE SHRM Foundation Veterans at Work Certificate Program which earns professionals 10 PDCs as well as information on the Foundation Scholarships
+ Discuss the new Associate in HR – aPHR – as well as the other HRCI certifications including Lifetime
+ Provide resources and tips regarding no or low cost recertification opportunities 
+ Discuss certification preparation options 

Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and share tips and techniques with fellow HR professionals.

Due to high demand of our workshops, if you have registered for one, please arrive no later than 15 minutes of the start time to ensure entry into the workshop. Those arriving after the 15 minute window will not be permitted into the workshop.
