Pre-Meeting Workshop

Title: "The Aging Workforce - Tools and Strategies for Your Organization"

Speakers: Karen Roberts SPHR, SHRM SCP - HR/Healthy Living Director Area Agency on Aging, and Desirae Mearns, the Area Agency on Aging’s SHINE and Benefits Enrollment Center Project Director

Karen will present the SHRM Foundation's work on The Aging Workforce - Tools and Strategies for Your Organization.

In the U.S., more than 1/3 of the labor force will be over age 50 by 2022 (just 5 years away).  People are working longer and delaying retirement. Many HR professionals are facing challenges in filling open positions, so clearly older workers are an important part of the talent pool that shouldn’t be overlooked. This presentation will ask HR professionals how these trends will impact their workplace and will cover organizational strategies to recruit, retain and engage older workers.

Some companies do not proactively seek older workers due to common misconceptions. For example, thinking they cannot learn new technology, are resistant to change or are too expensive. However research tells a different story. Many of the new SHRM Foundation resources explain in detail the myths vs. realities of employing mature workers. SHRM resources that allow you to take action to develop a Mature Worker Strategy will be discussed.

Desirae will provide HR professionals with information about the Agency's SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Program which is  funded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and is administered by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and is staffed by volunteers. SHINE volunteers (typically retired professionals) are available to speak to employees nearing age 65 and retiree groups to ensure they have the most effective and affordable coverage for their health and prescription drug needs.

Many employees and HR professionals do not understand how Medicare and Employer provided health care interact and many employees do not realize they are eligible for Medicare coverage while still employed and these options will be discussed in this presentation.

This program has been applied for SHRM and HRCI Recertification credits.
